Car Won't Start? What to Check First

A car that won't start can mean very different things depending on what you hear, or don't hear, when you turn the key — electrical, fuel, or ignition.

If you smell gasoline, see smoke, or hear repeated clicking with no crank, stop trying to start the car and have it towed or inspected rather than continuing to attempt starts.

Quick checks you can do safely

Listen closely: a single click usually points to the starter, rapid clicking usually points to a weak battery, and total silence can mean a dead battery or a loose connection.
Check that the battery terminals are clean and tight.
Watch the dashboard lights when you turn the key. Dim or flickering lights point to the battery or a connection, not the starter.
Make sure the gear selector is fully in Park, or Neutral with the clutch in for a manual, since some vehicles won't start otherwise.

What's usually behind it

A dead or weak battery
A failing starter motor
Corroded or loose battery or ground connections
A fuel delivery or ignition system problem

QUESTIONS

Car Won't Start: common questions

How do I know if it's the battery or the starter?

A rapid clicking sound or dim lights usually point to the battery. A single solid click with no crank often points to the starter. We test both so you're not guessing.

Can I just jump-start it myself?

Usually yes, if you know how to do it safely, but a jump only gets you moving — it doesn't explain why the battery was dead. If it keeps happening, have the battery and charging system tested.
